JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers has suspended a planned strike at JIC Mining Services, which provides mining companies with drilling and blasting services, after a new wage offer from the company.

The strike, which was expected to start on Sunday, could have affected drilling at Impala Platinum, Hernic Ferrochrome mine, a unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, and an Xstrata ooperation in the Limpopo province.

“The company has made some consensus regarding the wage demand and the strike action has been suspended pending the process of seeking new mandate from members,” a union official, Mxhasi Sthethi, said on Monday.

The union was demanding that JIC Mining Services raise workers’ pay to 3,000 rand ($428.7) from 2,000 rand per month. Sthethi said the company had offered 2,900 rand.

The other mine that could have been affected with the work stoppage is the Royal Bafokeng’s Resimone platinum mine, due to be listed on the JSE next week.
