NJR Made of Steel DIY Challenge: The Best in Braai DIY

We recently wrapped up our NJR Made of Steel DIY Challenge, and we were absolutely blown away by the incredible creativity and craftsmanship that South Africans brought to the table. We asked you to show us what you could build, and you truly delivered.

One thing, in particular, became crystal clear: South Africans love to braai.

It’s no secret that the braai is a core part of our national identity.

It’s where we gather, where we celebrate, and where we share stories.

This passion was the undeniable theme of our competition, with the vast majority of entries being some form of a custom-built, one-of-a-kind DIY braai.

From complex smokers to portable wonders and everything in-between, the entries made the entire competition feel uniquely South African.

We at NJR Steel were incredibly impressed by the ingenuity and passion that went into every single project.

This past October 26th, the streets of Joburg were alive with the familiar energy and excitement of the 94.7 Ride Joburg.

For the NJR Steel team, however, this race represented something far greater than just kilometers and finish times. It was a "Ride For A Purpose," a powerful initiative dedicated to championing the incredible work of Seeds of Africa .

NJR Steel's Made of Steel DIY Challenge showcased the incredible creativity and skill of steel enthusiasts.

Water-Wheel Spit Braai

"A water-wheel driven Spit Braai: my entry for the Made of Steel challenge.

The commission was based on a video I saw. Everything I make is unique, so I made this one-of-a-kind with the same industrial gear feel. Most parts were found at scrap yards and by stripping gearboxes for parts.

I used food-grade stainless steel for all parts in contact with the meat. The wooden wheel was provided."

"I am a sculptor who uses NJR Steel as the medium for all of my sculptures. I chose The Octopus as my subject because its unique characteristics inspired me to create this piece for the Mpumalanga Show's adult small fauna art competition. I'm happy to report that the sculpture secured first place.

I use NJR Steel's plate, round, and flat bar for its high-quality steel. I also use welding rods from NJR to arc weld my sculptures. In my experience, no order is too big or too small, and the service at NJR Steel is both efficient and friendly."

"I needed an extraordinary braai for our guesthouse. I found a very old cast-iron cooking pot, half-buried under some bushes on our farm.

My wife, a Pinterest master, quickly found some great ideas.

I happened to have some old 12mm x 180mm flat bar lengths that my dad bought from NJR Steel ten years ago for a project that was later cancelled.

When he moved house, he didn't have space for the metal anymore. Ten years later, I finally found a use for it! Luckily, my father-in-law had a plasma cutter that I could borrow to cut them. A few back-breaking hours later, I was finally done.

I was worried someone might steal it, but once it was assembled, you needed three people to move the thing! The braai grid fits it like a glove."

It's driven by a Centurion Vantage 500 smart motor and features bullet hinges supported on ball bearings for smooth operation. The gate has a mild steel design with a mechanical mechanism."

"This project was made for my mother, who enjoys sitting in the sun.

The chair has an adjustable backrest with a locking mechanism that allows it to be used in either a stationary or a swinging mode.

It also has a movable bracket to mount an umbrella. The chair is fabricated from 25x25x2, 38x38x2, and 50x50x2 square tubing, which was purchased from NJR Steel Middelburg."

Artistic Floral Driveway Gate

"Late last year, I purchased a house in Westville. The house had an old charm, and I wanted to ensure the renovations kept with the ethos of the area: an integration with nature that felt green, earthy, serene, and wholesome.

A few plants were transplanted to the rear of the property as they were disrupted during construction. However, I felt the most equitable way to maintain the ethos was to highlight nature in a unique way. The long-term solution is to re-landscape, incorporating indigenous flora and fauna. In the short term, however, I decided to combine the strength of steel and the elegance of nature in the form of a gate.

I spent three weeks planning the gate, incorporating the various materials available at NJR Steel .

My welding skills were developed through years of arc welding with DIY tools. Once the gate was squared and the emblems and 6mm round bars were welded in place, a metal etch primer was applied and finished with black paint. Later, the leaves and stems were highlighted with a spray can. The entire construction and installation process took three months, resulting in a gate that is safe, practical, and beautiful."

NJR Made Of Steel DIY Challenge: Top 12

The NJR Made Of Steel DIY Challenge invited participants to unleash their creativity and showcase their best steel creations.

We were absolutely blown away by the incredible response, with entries ranging from impressive Braais and Gates to intricate Sculptures and Custom Furniture.

Every submission was a testament to the talent and dedication of our entrants. Each project was carefully evaluated on a 21-point structure, and after much anticipation, the winners were officially announced on October 3rd.

"I just wanted to share a redesigned table. This was originally designed as a dining table.

I build custom, handmade furniture as a hobby; I work in construction for a living.

I decided to share my work on Facebook, and a client contacted me asking if I'd be able to assist in his quest to revamp his company. His office is in the middle of a world-renowned art space in Johannesburg, inside the Hollard Insurance building. The whole place is decorated with art from all over South Africa.

We emailed UK-based furniture makers Steel Vintage and paid a fee to use and redesign their desk as an office desk. We only had the rights to pictures of the desk available online, and no drawings were provided, so everything was done from scratch.

With this in mind, I recruited a very talented draughtsman, and we were able to share knowledge and details about the desk. The table is 2100mm long, 900mm wide, and 850mm from the floor to the desktop. It weighs roughly 600kg, with an oak wood top and inlays. The rest is brass inlays for decoration, and the metal is still bare, but it has been treated with a self-made formula.

The theme is steampunk industrial, and the original desk was designed based on the UK flag. We had to make it "Suid-Afrikaans," so copper tubing and industrial bolts were used and TIG-welded. The welding seams are all hidden on the desk itself, but for some parts, the welding had to be visible. Button-head bolts and rivets tie all the elements together.

So, let me present my version of the UK-branded Steel Vintage's "The Kingsbridge" desk. Every part was designed from scratch; only pictures seen on the web were used.

"This is my full steel armour, based on the character Issei Hyoudou.

Made almost entirely out of metal from @njrsteel (excluding the trousers and shirt), this piece is held together with a total of 453 rivets, and I lost count of the internal weld points.

All the armour's patterns were originally designed, measured, cut out, cleaned, polished, and colour-prepped by me — no external templates were used. The hinges used for the mobility of the arms and shoulders were also custom-made using cut-offs from a steel bar from a previous project.

For the finishing touches, the colour was done via powder coating, there are internal LEDs, and the details are all outlined with markers to give the character a hand-drawn appearance.

This was the first big metal/steel project I ever worked on, and it took a total of three years to complete. My affinity for working with metal and steel began when I made a rib cage neck piece when I was 16 years old. Eventually, I decided that I wanted to create an authentic headpiece made entirely out of metal. I became obsessed with the project and the process, and it continued from there until, after much trial and error, I finished with this final piece.

"With a passion for steelwork and an obsession with overlanding 4x4 videos came the dream of an off-roading camper.

Building my own was the answer to achieving my dream. The first design was built around a camping trailer, but that soon changed into a bigger and better design. The frame design consists of a fold-out kitchen on one side and a fold-out bed on the other. The roof lifts to give headspace to stand up in.

Over the last nine months, I have been working in my free time, using products and materials from NJR Meyerton. I used a variety of tubing and channels and will be using aluminium sheets for the exterior, bringing it all together one weld at a time.

The next phases will be to cover the exterior and finish the interior. The last phase will be to take it out into nature and enjoy the muddy roads in and around South Africa."

stage for agribusiness in Southern Africa.

Under the theme “Global Agriculture, Local!” , the event emphasised how international

advances in agri-technology and innovation can be adapted and applied in South Africa’s

diverse landscapes.

From precision farming to resource-efficient practices, the message was

clear: sustainability and productivity go hand in hand.

For NJR Steel Cape Town, this year’s NAMPO was an opportunity to reaffirm relationships

On July 18th, South Africans unite to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela by dedicating 67 minutes to serving others—one minute for every year of his public service.

At NJR Steel, this day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a call to action embraced with heart and purpose. Across the country, our branches transformed the spirit of Mandela Day into tangible support for the communities we call home, proving that every act of kindness, big or small, helps build a better future.

Building Safe Havens for a Brighter Tomorrow

A recurring theme in this year’s initiatives was the fundamental need for security. Several NJR Steel branches harnessed their core expertise to create safe, welcoming spaces for the most vulnerable members of society.

In Potchefstroom, the team lent a hand and some fencing to the Day Care Centre for the Aged in Ikageng, securing a vegetable garden that provides dignified nutrition for our elders.

Similarly, NJR Steel Brits supported the Opkyk Pathways Therapy and Educational Centre by donating De-Fence panels to protect the containers housing their new solar system, securing the critical infrastructure that powers learning for children with special needs.

This commitment to protecting potential was echoed by the Pretoria East branch, which helped repair the perimeter fence at Agape Time to Learn Pre-School. These projects, along with others that included supplying roof sheeting to rebuild fire-damaged infrastructure, are a testament to our belief that safe spaces are the foundation upon which futures are built. It is our mission to turn strength into service and steel into solidarity.

Extending Compassion to Every Corner, Paws Included

Madiba’s message of care extends to all living beings, a principle our teams passionately upheld. Several branches directed their efforts towards supporting local animal shelters, who work tirelessly to protect our furry companions.

NJR Steel Middelburg made a heartfelt donation of food and essential supplies to the Middelburg SPCA, while the Pretoria West team provided 22 IBR sheets to Wollies Animal Shelter, helping to improve shelter conditions during the harsh winter months.

In Alberton, the Alrode branch also stepped up, donating essential food and supplies to the SPCA, offering warmth and comfort when the chill bites hardest. These actions underscore a deep-seated belief that compassion should have no bounds.

Nourishing Communities and Filling Hearts

Beyond infrastructure and supplies, our teams focused on the vital need for nourishment and human connection.

NJR Steel Vereeniging organised a non-perishable food collection drive for the Catherine Robson Children’s Home, helping to fill cupboards and feed futures. In Polokwane, the team brought pure joy to the learners at Rethuseng Special School, treating them to a party with delicious snacks and a generous side of love.

This spirit of giving was felt across the nation. In Cape Town, the Ravensmead branch donated 67 care packs and a warm cup of soup to underprivileged children, a simple act that reminds them they are seen and valued.

Collectively, our branches donated over 130 warm blankets, assembled numerous food and gift parcels, and supplied mattresses and learning materials to local kindergartens, embodying Madiba’s enduring message: “It’s in our hands to make a difference.”

From a reflective 67-second morning huddle to sharing 67 cups of coffee with customers and staff in Pietermaritzburg, every gesture was a link in a nationwide chain of kindness.

This Mandela Day, the NJR Steel family demonstrated that whether it’s through protecting, rebuilding, or nourishing, our collective strength lies in our commitment to uplifting others.

Re-roofing a Landmark: NJR Delivers Engineering Precision at NWU Auditorium

NJR Potchefstroom was recently commissioned by North-West University (NWU) to solve a persistent leak in the auditorium roof—a complex task due to the very low pitch of the existing structure. Rather than replace the roof entirely, the team opted to erect a new roof structure over the old one. This solution ensured minimal disruption to ongoing activities inside the auditorium.

In the absence of an appointed architect, NJR joined the design team directly, offering both product expertise and technical input. Our proposed light steel truss system was reviewed and approved by the project’s structural engineer.

The project posed significant engineering challenges. The 40-year-old auditorium had no CAD documentation—only original paper plans. The building’s large, kite-shaped roof spans 70 metres diagonally and 35 metres across the shorter axis, with perimeter wall heights reaching 12 metres.

To Accommodate the Shape and Pitch Requirements

NJR designed and supplied over 110 uniquely sized light steel trusses—some as deep as 2.5 metres. These were fabricated using NJR Steel’s light-gauge profiles, engineered to ensure structural integrity and water resistance.

The new trusses were integrated parallel to the existing roof structure, supported by custom girder trusses spaced at 1.2-metre intervals to evenly distribute loads.

All brackets used to mount the new structure were laser-cut, bent, and fabricated in-house. NJR’s top-hat roof battens provided both lateral bracing and secure fastening points for the roof sheets.

Precise Fitment & Streamlined Installation

On-site logistics were equally complex. Due to underground utilities and limited access, no cranes could be used. Materials—including pre-assembled trusses—were manually hoisted along the building’s side using ropes.

Despite the constraints, NJR ensured precise fitment and a streamlined installation. Light steel roofing screws were used to guarantee long-term durability under demanding conditions.

Heavy rainfall during the project added urgency, demanding rapid turnaround in both supply and installation.

Despite weather and access constraints, the NJR light-steel truss system proved ideal—lightweight yet structurally robust. Crucially, the new roof required no additional reinforcement to the existing structure, delivering an efficient and cost-effective solution.

Founded in 1980 by Nigel Riley, NJR Steel Westdene has established itself as one of South Africa's leading steel merchants and manufacturers. The company's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is evident in its excellent service, reliable deliveries, and competitive pricing. However, what truly sets NJR Steel Westdene apart is its dedication to recognizing and nurturing the potential of its employees.

One such inspiring story is that of Mbulaheni Makhuvha, known to many as Aubrey. Aubrey's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the opportunities that arise when a company believes in the potential of its people.

In 1995, Aubrey earned his Secondary Teachers Diploma. However, the job market was saturated with teachers, prompting him to relocate to Gauteng in search of better opportunities. For several years, Aubrey struggled to find employment. His fortunes changed on June 9, 1998, when he joined F. Bosazza & Sons as a Casual Worker. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Aubrey recalls:

"It was a challenging period, but I knew I had to prove myself. Hard work always pays off."

F. Bosazza & Sons, which had been taken over by NJR Steel Westdene in 1980, provided Aubrey with the platform to showcase his skills. His relentless dedication did not go unnoticed.

On July 18, 1998, the company offered him a permanent position as a General Worker. From then on, Aubrey amassed valuable experience in various roles, including assistant driver, steel packer, and cutter. His perseverance and commitment to excellence earned him the position of Hardware Stock Controller.

In 2002, Aubrey's hard work was rewarded once again when he was promoted to Counter Sales Consultant. A special highlight in his career came in 2006 when he was awarded the runner-up title for "Best Sales Consultant of the NJR Steel Group." Aubrey fondly remembers:

"Being recognized as one of the best was a testament to my dedication and passion for my work."

Two years later, Aubrey reached another significant milestone by becoming an Internal Sales Consultant. Now, in 2025, as he enters his 27th year with NJR Steel Westdene, he proudly serves as Senior Internal Sales. This role allows him to impart his extensive knowledge to others while being recognized by all as a cornerstone of dependability within the company.

Reflecting on his journey, Aubrey says:

"For me, it has been a long and successful journey with F. Bosazza & Sons and NJR Steel Westdene. They have acknowledged my hard work and dedication over the years by decorating me with my 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th Year Awards. I was given the opportunity to grow, and I took it with both hands."

Tyrone joined NJR Steel on February 17, 1992, and over the past three decades, he has demonstrated unwavering commitment and an entrepreneurial spirit that has helped shape the company’s growth. Starting at the cash sale counter, he progressed through various sales positions before taking on his first management role at the Westdene branch. His leadership journey continued as he managed Alrode, became an equity holder in 2003, and was appointed operational director of the group in 2011.

As an operational director, Tyrone has overseen multiple divisions within NJR Steel, including Westdene, Exports, Mesh, Processing, Fencing, Johannesburg North, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and, more recently, Potchefstroom, Vereeniging, and Bothaville. His strategic vision has driven business development in key areas such as Polokwane, exports, fencing, and manufacturing ventures, demonstrating his ability to identify and capitalize on new opportunities.

NJR Durban Partners with 3RC to Build a Brighter Future for Inanda’s Youth

The Read and Ride Reading Club (3RC)

Founded in 2017 by M. Andile Mdewuka, a dedicated community leader in Inanda Ezimangweni, who turned a personal challenge into a transformative initiative. When Andile’s son, Wonga, struggled academically in Grade 1, he stepped in to provide daily after-school support. Wonga’s dramatic improvement inspired Andile to think about the many other children in the community who lacked similar assistance.

Determined to Make a Difference

Andile opened his home to local children, offering reading sessions, homework help, and borrowed books from the library. To keep the children motivated, he introduced recreational activities like go-kart racing and chess. This unique approach, combining learning and play, led to the creation of the Read and Ride Reading Club.

In 2023, Andile took 3RC to new heights by organizing its first annual “Read and Ride Race,” a community event celebrating the importance of reading and education. A key partner in the event’s success was NJR Steel, led by Anthony Chapman, Manager of NJR Steel’s Durban branch. Anthony recognized the club’s potential and went above and beyond to support the initiative. NJR Steel sponsored essential items, including safety gear, protective equipment, medals, and trophies, ensuring the event was safe, memorable, and impactful.

This Year, NJR Steel Donated Two New Bicycles and Several Books as Prizes

Anthony’s involvement extended beyond financial support—he mentored Andile in the planning and personally attended the event, engaging with the children and showing genuine care for the community’s development. His leadership inspired other local Bridge City businesses, including Planet Care, Mpact Recycling, and Jwayelani Butchery, to contribute food, trophies, and additional resources. The event was a resounding success, uniting the community and bringing Andile’s vision to life.

Thanks to this support, 3RC has grown into a symbol of hope and transformation, turning a crime-affected area into a thriving, education-focused community. Anthony’s commitment and NJR Steel’s backing have been instrumental in this journey.

The club continues to grow, and NJR Steel will once again lend its support for its third annual race in 2025.

NJR Steel Celebrates Zululami House's 2024 SAISC Win

NJR Steel is proud to have sponsored the Light Steel Frame Category at this year’s SAISC Steel Awards. Congratulations to Zululami House, the winning project, which showcases the remarkable innovation and efficiency of lightweight steel framing in residential construction.

Located on the North Coast, Zululami House was designed as a retirement residence, meeting the client’s vision for a traditional home with high-pitched roofs and open spaces. The decision to use light steel framing allowed the team to create large, vaulted ceilings and an open-plan living area, while ensuring cost-effectiveness and structural integrity.

The project demonstrates the remarkable capabilities of light steel framing in premium residential construction, with innovative structural solutions enabling the creation of vast, open-plan living spaces.

One of the standout engineering feats was the creation of a 6.5-meter-wide, 13.6-meter-long open-plan living space, supported by innovative web trusses and pocket-holed wall attachments to ensure stability.

The meticulous prefabrication and phased deliveries facilitated a rapid construction timeline without compromising on quality.

The steel fabrication process was meticulously planned, with components pre-engineered and prefabricated off-site, allowing for accurate detailing and minimizing material waste.

Deliveries were strategically phased to avoid site congestion, optimizing the construction workflow.

The erection and installation of the steel frame was a highly coordinated effort, utilizing 3D modeling for clash detection and constructability reviews prior to on-site assembly.

This enabled the seamless integration of structural elements, building services, and architectural features.

The project team, including Build 26-6, JHC Projects, LevEco Architects, Barry Kriel Consulting, and Trumod, collaborated to deliver a steel-framed home that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with modern construction methods.

In a monumental step for Gauteng's transport infrastructure, Slim B&D Construction, backed by Ricasha Build, has been awarded a significant tender for the enhancement of the PWV5 (Winnie Mandela Road/R511) and N14 roads in Diepsloot. This project, which includes the construction of three major bridges, marks a critical enhancement of the region's road network.

NJR Steel is thrilled to announce its role as the primary supplier of reinforcing cut and bend steel for the bridges, delivering a substantial 275 tons of high-quality steel from our Brakpan Processing branch.

In a heart-warming display of community support, NJR Steel Meyerton has announced a new partnership with a local non-profit organization, Angel from Henley, led by the compassionate Alinah Ntswaki.

This May, NJR Steel Meyerton will be dedicating resources to assist in Alinah’s amazing efforts to feed the homeless and underprivileged families in Meyerton.

The Angel from Henley: A Beacon of Hope

Alinah Ntswaki, often referred to as the Angel from Henley, began her mission six years ago at the Henley Dumping site.

Her journey in creating what is now called “Sweet Smell from Heaven” started with a simple yet profound desire to alleviate hunger among the most vulnerable.

Over the years, her operation has grown significantly. What started with feeding 40 people at the dumping site has now expanded to feeding 130 people in Meyerton, and 300 children in Sithelo.

Alinah works tirelessly, often single-handedly, with the occasional help of volunteers to prepare and distribute meals. Despite the scale of her operation, she remains committed to her mission, driven by a deep passion to help those in need.

The meals, consisting of nutritious staples like spinach, potatoes, polony for soup, and bread, are largely dependent on donations, highlighting the community’s role in sustaining this vital service.

The latest insights from the "State of the Metals and Engineering Sector Report 2024" released by the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa) on February 20 reveal a nuanced picture of South Africa’s critical metals and engineering sector. Despite a modest 1.7% increase in aggregate production in 2023 — an uptick from 2022's 1.5% rise — the sector remains 18% below its pre-2008/9 levels.

Moreover, the 2023 index of production consistently lagged about 4.2% behind its long-term average, indicating ongoing challenges in reaching historical productivity highs.

Crude Steel Production Surge in 2024

Adding to the sector's dynamics, South Africa's crude steel production has shown a notable surge in the first quarter of 2024, with production surging by 13.8% compared to the previous quarter (Q4 2023), reaching 1.3 million metric tons.

February 2024 alone witnessed an extraordinary 17.0% increase in crude steel production compared to February 2023, marking this as the fourth consecutive month of double-digit growth since November 2023. This marks a significant expansion in the nation's steel manufacturing capabilities and showcases a resilient industrial landscape.

Despite this growth, production levels still lag behind pre-COVID benchmarks. March 2024 alone saw production reach 441,800 tonnes, a 2.8% increase over March 2023, continuing a trend of four consecutive months of output increase since December 2023.

Economic Context and Future Outlook

This sector, which accounts for approximately 26.2% of South Africa’s manufacturing output, finds itself at a crossroads amid moderating inflation and persistent geopolitical tensions. During the online launch of the report, Seifsa's COO Tafadzwa Chibanguza provided a cautiously optimistic outlook for 2024. It’s hard to believe that an entire year has passed since the exciting acquisition by NJR Steel of Staalbeer Steel Merchants’ three branches, located in Potchefstroom, Vereeniging, and Bothaville.

As we commemorate this significant milestone, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the impressive strides we have taken over the past year and to look ahead at the promising opportunities that lie on the horizon.

A Year of Expanding & Improving

Purchasing the three Staalbeer branches in Potchefstroom, Vereeniging and Bothaville and then setting them up as NJR Steel branches was a major move for NJR Steel that took a lot of hard work and dedication from both the existing NJR staff and the staff at the original Staalbeer branches that joined our family.

It helped us spread our wings into important parts of South Africa, adding the Trusses to our mix and expanding our roofing options, while also broadening our footprint in the North West province.

In addition to the above, we’re happy to announce the opening of a new improved bigger hardware store at our Bothaville branch which is in line with the NJR model across all it’s branches . This means we are a “one stop shop” meeting all your needs under one roof, providing a wide range of products.

And that’s not all! In the next two months, we’re planning to launch similar hardware stores at our Potchefstroom and Vereeniging branches.

Steel Industry Outlook: Projected Growth, Global Trends, and Economic Influences for 2023-2024

In its recent update on the Short Range Outlook (SRO) for 2023 and 2024, the World Steel Association (worldsteel) projects a 1.8% growth in steel demand this year, totaling 1.81 billion tons, following a contraction of 3.3% in 2022.

Anticipating a further increase, worldsteel estimates a 1.9% growth in steel demand for 2024, reaching 1.85 billion tones.

Chairperson of the worldsteel economics committee, Máximo Vedoya, attributed the impact on steel demand to the prevailing high inflation and interest rates. Since mid-2022, steel-using sectors have experienced a significant slowdown in activities, affecting various regions, notably the European Union (EU) and the US.

Vedoya emphasized the expectation of a gradual steel demand recovery in 2024, particularly in advanced economies, as a consequence of the delayed effects of the tightening monetary policy. He highlighted that emerging economies, especially in Asia, are expected to outpace their developed counterparts, displaying resilience.

Regarding China, worldsteel anticipates stabilization in the property market later this year, leading to slight positive growth in steel demand, attributed to government measures. The outlook for China in 2024 remains uncertain and depends on policy directions to address economic challenges arising from structural transitions.

Vedoya acknowledged uncertainties linked to regional conflicts and unrest, such as those in Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, and elsewhere, which may contribute to rising oil prices and further geo-economic fragmentation, posing downside risks.

Despite the impact of high interest rates on construction activities, infrastructure investment exhibits positive momentum globally, particularly in advanced economies due to decarbonization efforts, Vedoya added.

While acknowledging the easing of supply chain bottlenecks, worldsteel noted a slowdown in the manufacturing sector under weakening demand, with the consumer durables sector particularly affected.

The association projected a continued recovery in auto production throughout 2023, supported by order backlogs and supply chain improvements. However, a deceleration in the auto sector is expected in 2024.

In terms of steel demand dynamics in emerging and developing economies, excluding China, worldsteel highlighted a divergence, with developing Asia remaining resilient. Steel demand in these economies is expected to grow by 4.1% in 2023 and 4.8% in 2024, rebounding from a 0.6% decline in 2022.

The impact of the Russia-Ukraine war is evident in Egypt's steel demand, suffering from high interest rates, severe currency depreciation, limited foreign currency access, and higher production costs. A slight improvement is anticipated in 2024 as inflation is expected to peak in the second half of this year.

One outstanding example is the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, an architectural marvel featuring a grand arch that supports the roof, made possible by high-quality steel.

This stadium not only hosts sporting events but also stands as a symbol of modern engineering and design.

The imposing stadium body of Moses Mabhida Stadium is covered with an unconventional roof consisting of a steel arch, which spans the pitch and is stabilized by the cable structure, combined with a membrane roof.

The combination of a steel cable structure and a lightweight cable net, is quite unique for a wide span roof structure and was a challenging project, for both the planners and engineers as well as our installation team.

This project rightly deserves to be called one of the worlds most sophisticated steel structures.

Another awe-inspiring structure is the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg.

This iconic bridge, with its elegant steel suspension cables, not only connects different parts of the city but also represents unity and progress. It showcases the durability and versatility of steel in creating structures that stand the test of time.

The 176m-long bridge carries two traffic lanes, a bicycle path and two pedestrian walkways, each 1.5m wide. The walkways feature continuous glass parapet for the safety of pedestrians.

Steel brackets support the walkways. The pylons, which act as balancing structures to the bridge, were constructed asymmetrically due to the presence of railway tracks.

Only two locations were found feasible for constructing the pylon, one in the north and the other in the south. The northern pylon is 42m high and the southern one is 27m high. These pylons are made of lateral bracing and are set up on cone shaped concrete pier structures. The pylon shafts are circular in shape with a diameter of 1.35m.

The space available for accessing the ramps was limited; hence the deck of the bridge being so narrow. The deck structure is constructed with composite steel-reinforced concrete. It is composed of two longitudinal steel box beams on either side and a concrete slab supported by a cross beam at intervals of 4m. The interior surfaces of the steel box beams are unpainted and are protected against humidity.

The bridge structure is supported by large pot bearings of 1.5m diameter. These bearings are designed to suit movements of the bridge at high temperatures.

Expansion joints are created at the abutment areas of the bridge. Steel pendulums are used to accommodate the displacement due to temperature fluctuations at the deck, and the abutment.

The stay cables of the bridge are 15mm in diameter. They were supplied by Haggie Wire and Strand and Marley Pipe Systems. The installation and stressing of the cables was performed by Amsteele Systems / Steeledale Fixing Systems.

Construction of the bridge required 4,000m³ of concrete and 1,000t of structural steel. In addition, 500t of reinforcing steel was cast into the concrete for reinforcement .

Amandletu School Bridge: Rising Stronger with NJR Steel

The Amandletu Bridge had long been a vital link for the Amaoti Inanda Community, enabling students, teachers, and community members to access their school, healthcare, and other essential services. However, the catastrophic KwaZulu Natal floods in April 2022 wreaked havoc on the region, causing the bridge to be washed away.

In the wake of these devastating floods the community of was left disconnected from their school, clinic and a home for the elderly. Recognizing the urgency to restore connectivity and ensure the safety of the community, a resilient solution has emerged as the eThekwini Municipality flood relief project.

The Qajana Group was awarded the task of rebuilding the bridge. The collaborative effort of eThekwini Municipality and local businesses showcases the commitment to restoring essential infrastructure and ensuring the safety and connectivity of the residents.

Reinforced Concrete: Building a Resilient Structure

Mr Shezi, a managing member of the Qajana Group spoke of the many challenges faced during the rebuilding period. The biggest challenge was water. Apart from the constant waterflow and heavy rainfall experienced in the area, a river that runs parallel to the bridge had to be diverted using sheet piling.

Steel sheet piles are long structural sections of sheet steel with vertically interlocking edges that are driven into the ground. Sheet piles provide earth retention and excavation support. Sheet piles are most commonly made of steel, but can also be formed of timber and reinforced concrete.

This type of piling system is commonly used for retaining walls, land reclamation, underground structures, such as car parks and basements, and in marine locations for riverbanks, seawalls and so on. Their exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation make them a reliable choice for withstanding the forces exerted by potential future floodwaters.

The superstructure of the bridge is being constructed using reinforced concrete, further enhancing its strength and resilience. Reinforced concrete combines the compressive strength of concrete with high tensile strength of steel reinforcement bars (rebar) to create a highly durable material capable of withstanding heavy loads and extreme conditions.

Government and Business Unite to Revitalize Steel and Engineering Sector for Economic Growth

With government and business both looking to infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic recovery, there is consensus on one thing: cooperation will be needed to kick off building projects before growth becomes a reality.

The Steel and Engineering Industry Federation of SA (SEIFSA) agrees that a pro-business agenda was clear in President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address (SONA), and it is hopeful that government's plans to invest in infrastructure development – and support localization – will help the beleaguered steel and engineering sector recover.

President Cyril Ramaphosa met with business leaders in the steel and engineering industries on the 18th of April 2023 to discuss measures that government, the industry and other social partners will take together to grow the sector and ensure its future sustainability.

President Ramaphosa met with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) led by Chairperson, Mr Elias Monage, at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. The purpose of the meeting was to deepen engagement between government and this strategic sector of the economy. The meeting was the first direct engagement between a South African Head of State and the sector since SEIFSA’s formation almost 80 years ago.

In the first State of the Nation Address of the 6th Administration, in 2019, President Ramaphosa directed that the sector be given specific focus through the development of a steel and metal fabrication master plan. In June 2021 the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition signed the sector master plan, which provides a blueprint for the industry to revitalize and expand production.

The master plan is a key part of the reimagined industrial strategy which President Ramaphosa has championed to unleash private investment and support inclusive growth.

“The steel sector is at the heart of our economy, as it has a significant multiplier effect and is one of largest job creators in the manufacturing sector. Our infrastructure drive should be the catalyst that propels its recovery and growth. We are determined to build a local steel sector that is strong, competitive and well positioned for the future”, said President Ramaphosa.

The President outlined the actions being taken to achieve energy security, improve the performance of the freight logistics system and tackle corruption and crime, which have received strong support from business leaders. Government and industry representatives discussed opportunities for local steel in the effort to rehabilitate the rail network, expand the national transmission grid and build water infrastructure, as well as the need to invest in skills development.

The SEIFSA leadership expressed its support in working with government and other social partners to address the country’s challenges and unlock investment in the sector.

Projected Increase in Demand for Steel & Value Added Steel Products in 2023

A Hopeful Outlook for South African Steel in African Mining Projects

Engineering News has reported a projected increase in demand for South African value added steel products in mining projects across Africa amid poor service delivery and high transport costs from China, as well as rising political tension between China and Australia.

Adding to this, Bloomberg reports that China will again cut annual crude steel production in 2023, marking the third year in a row that the government has mandated reduced output in order to rein in carbon emissions.

As a result of difficulties with China, Australia-based mine owners are sourcing new suppliers and creating opportunities for local suppliers to meet this demand as well as demand from Africa says export trade promotion agency International Steel Fabricators (ISF) CEO Neels van Niekerk.

Customs data shows a total of 73 484 tons of primary steel products exported by South Africa during December 2022. A decline of 41,4% and 35,7% compared to December 2021 and 2019 respectively. Annual 2022 exports declined by 3,2% and 43,2% compared to the same period in 2021 and 2019 respectively. During 2022, the share of exported primary steel product was as follows: flat products (46,6%), section and bar (26,2%), intermediate products, (21,3%), wire (5,5%), and rail (0,3%).

South Africa exported approximately 867 000 tons of steel to African countries in 2022. Exports were mostly destined to sub-Saharan African countries.

However Van Niekerk tells Engineering News that demand for locally-produced steel structures is expected to surge before the end of the year . “Local suppliers need to bring their offering to the attention of the identified potential clients wherever they are situated to access these opportunities,” enthuses Van Niekerk.

“We have already received numerous requests from all over South Africa and beyond for the sourcing of products listed. Merchant members are now able to load the details of their service offerings while being part of an interactive map, which should reduce the need to interact with the ISF Secretariat,” says Van Niekerk.

The organization aims to increase export volumes of value-added steel structures, mine processing and pressure equipment from its Southern African members and to grow the number of exporters joining the ISF’s endeavors.

National Budget Suggests Further Opportunities for Growth within South Africa

The 2023-24 National Budget also presented some opportunities for the local steel sector that, if realised, would propel steel demand in the local market.

Some of the key announcements were around supporting infrastructure, mainly transport and logistics, water and sanitation, and the construction sector. R903 billion was allocated to infrastructure development over the medium-term expenditure framework. Most of the spending is allocated to transport and logistics (R351.1 billion) and water and sanitation (R132.5 billion). This is a pivotal point for the steel sector, whose performance is driven by investment in infrastructure.

The large-scale “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects already approved include:

R3.8 billion over the medium term for Phase 2 of the Welisizwe Rural Bridges programme which is expected to start in April this year. The plan is to install 96 bridges annually to enable rural communities in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, and North West to safely and more easily access schools and workplaces.

The 488-bed Limpopo Central Hospital which will finally begin construction in March this year.

This is good news for local suppliers and manufacturers in these sectors who can beat loadshedding and create a reliable supply chain for local and international demand.

Iron-ore jumps on China data, bullish steel demand outlook

BEIJING - Iron-ore futures jumped on Wednesday, as better-than-expected China manufacturing activity data raised hopes for a demand rebound in the world's top steel producer.

The most-traded May iron ore futures contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) ended daytime trade 2.42% higher at 908.5 yuan ($131.64) a tonne, after closing about 0.8% lower in the previous session.

On the Singapore Exchange, the benchmark April iron-ore was up 2.17% at $126.05 a tonne, as of 07:03 GMT, extending gains.

China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI)climbed to 52.6 last month, the highest reading since April 2012, up from 50.1 in the previous month.

"We believe the better-than-expected data has injected some confidence into the market. Also, the expectation of continued improvement in downstream (steel) demand lent support to the prices of raw materials including iron ore," said Yu Chen, a Shanghai-based senior iron-ore analyst at consultancy Mysteel.

Eskom confirms diesel spend of R18bn and climbing

Eskom CFO Calib Cassim told lawmakers on Tuesday that the State-owned utility had spent R18-billion on diesel for its current financial year-to-date, which began in April last year, and that it would probably need to spend another R4-billion until the end of March, raising the overall diesel spend for the year to R22-billion.

The utility was continuing to operate its diesel-fuelled open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) despite having announced in November that it was no longer in a financial position to do so.

AMSA warns of lower full-year earnings amid global, domestic headwinds

The JSE share price of steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) fell by nearly 22% on January 24, after it warned of lower profits for the financial year ended December 31, 2022.

In a trading statement and business update, the steel producer said its earnings per share (EPS) for the financial year were likely to be between R2.20 and R2.50 – a decrease of 58% to 63% compared with the EPS of R5.94 reported for the 2021 financial year.

‘Benguela gem’ diamond recovery vessel shines as overall Steel Awards winner

“While there is tremendous merit across all of our entrants, as well as all our category winners,” enthuses Gebremeskel, “the SAISC Annual Awards judges were unanimous in their praise of our overall winner – which was also the winner of the Mining category – the Benguela General Treatment Plant mining facility, aboard the ‘Benguela Gem’.

The Benguela Gem is owned by Debmarine Namibia, a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers Group and the government of the Republic of Namibia.”

The Benguela Gem is the product of international collaboration: designed in Norway and Poland, built in Romania and fitted out by De Beers Marine South Africa.

This 3000 ton diamond treatment plant is the world’s most advanced diamond recovery vessel, and was completed ahead of schedule. Debmarine diamond recovery takes place at 90 – 150 metres below sea level and is floating as opposed to being stationery and anchored. This presented unique engineering challenges as a sea-faring structure that is able to complete the entire under-sea diamond dredging and treatment process.

The treatment plant was nominated by designers PBA Projects and completed in collaboration with De Beers Marine and 3C Metal Belmet, Namibia and local fabricators Steel Services and Allied Industries.

NJR Steel and Seeds of Africa Help Put An End To Shack Fires

Shack fires have had a deadly and devastating impact on townships across South African. One of the most catastrophic in the country’s history was in Cape Town at Imizamo Yethu, where about 4 500 structures were completely destroyed and approximately 15 000 residents lost their homes and possessions .

This was just one of multiple shack fires that has demolished homes, and raged across informal settlements. But these shack fires can be prevented . And it’s the mission of Milton Mzobe, a Community Leader and Pastor living in Cosmo City.

Milton has been deeply affected by the impact of shack fires on communities, so in 2014 he founded the NPO Akunamlilo Fire Fighters and has partnered with NJR Steel and other organizations for support to supply fire fighting equipment like Fire Extinguishers and Fire Prevention training to nearly 5000 shack owners in informal settlements in Gauteng.

Not only has Milton managed to start, run and maintain a successful NPO that is helping to educate thousands of South Africans on how to prevent fires , along with providing equipment to fight fires before they spread, he is also an inspiring positive role model and example of success to others in those communities.

Milton could not have achieved this without the support, guidance and training of Seeds of Change, one of the growing initiatives of Seeds of Africa which is supported by NJR Steel.

Steel At The Core of A Greener Economy For South Africa

Steel plays an integral role in producing and distributing renewable power , with steel being essential in manufacturing the structures that facilitate the production of renewable energy.

Solar farms, hydro-electric dams, wind turbines and tidal turbines are all steel-intensive infrastructure, specifically in solar and wind power where each new MW of solar power requires between 35 to 45 tons of steel , and each new MW of wind power requires 120 to 180 tons of steel. This highlights how the steel industry is perfectly positioned to reap the benefits from the renewable energy push.

While steel might be considered an emissions-heavy industry, steel is one hundred percent recyclable with a potentially endless lifecycle . It is also the most recycled material in the world.

Considering its usage and lifecycle in the renewable energy sector, steel more than makes up for its carbon footprint over its lifetime. An example is how a three-megawatt wind turbine can deliver 80 times more energy over 20 years than was used in its production and maintenance materials.

Over the last ten years many world-renowned steelmakers have also launched unique products designed for superior strength and high durability . These characteristics are essential for specific-use in solar and wind structures, which are constantly exposed to extreme weather conditions. Surging investments in renewable energy projects in China are also sending a bullish signal to the country’s steel sector, especially regarding steel products suitable for solar and wind power generation structures. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) China dominates the global solar PV supply chain after having invested over $50 billion developing supply capacity.

Currently, China’s share in manufacturing components of solar panels is more than 80%. Even if demand is being created, it will still take time to establish the local capacity to respond to that demand, while also having to compete with low-cost Chinese suppliers.

A Global Push Towards Renewables.

Investment Shifts Towards Renewables

It’s undeniable that a global energy transition is underway with governments and big players in mining, oil, gas and electricity announcing significant investments and strategic moves towards renewable energy growth.

According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy (2022), our global renewable energy generation has almost doubled in the last ten years with further increases forecast. “ By 2026, global renewable electricity capacity is forecast to rise more than 60% from 2020 levels to over 4 800 GW – equivalent to the current total global power capacity of fossil fuels and nuclear combined .” Says the IEA.

Renewables are set to account for almost 95% of the increase in global power capacity through 2026 , with solar PV alone providing more than half. This is primarily driven by legislated support through government policies and more ambitious clean energy goals announced before and during the COP26 Climate Change Conference.

“This year’s record renewable electricity additions of 290 gigawatts are yet another sign that a new global energy economy is emerging ,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

South Africa’s Renewable Energy Transition

South Africa has seen notable growth in renewable energy funding and focus, specifically since the introduction of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) in August 2011.

In three years, South Africa procured more investment in independent power generation than had been achieved across the African continent for the past 20 years (Eberhard et al 2014). The demand is also clear, with load shedding in 2021 overtaking 2020 as the most intensive year of load shedding to date and Eskom making stronger moves towards the renewables market.

While Coal still dominates the South African energy mix, providing just over 81% of the total system load, the contribution of renewable energy technologies increased in 2021 to a total of 5.7 GW installed capacity and provided almost 7% of the total energy mix. This is only the beginning of a determined and incentivised government push towards renewable energy.

Ramaphosa’a Energy Crisis Plan Sparks Change

An important step forward for the South African renewable energy market is the recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa, putting in place an Energy Crisis Plan with much needed measures to tackle South Africa's energy gap and to put an end load shedding.

His measures promised to “fundamentally transform” the electricity sector. These range from getting rid of licensing requirements for private energy projects that feed into the electricity grid; to allowing Eskom to buy power from existing independent power producers such as mines and paper mills, and to import power from neighbouring countries; to doubling the power to be procured in round six of the government's renewable energy procurement program.

Certain regulatory requirements will also be waived or streamlined – including the regulatory requirements for solar projects in areas of low and medium environmental sensitivity which further signals positive growth for the local solar market. Government also wants to encourage more businesses and households to opt for rooftop solar PV installations by incentivizing them to sell power to Eskom with the feed-in tariff.

The National Planning Commission (NPC) has also weighed in on the electricity crisis. Its plan calls for 10 000MW of wind and solar power and 5 000MW of battery storage to be built as an urgent priority.

Duncan Wanblad, the South African-born CEO of Anglo American, said the reforms announced by the president add to huge strides the country has made in renewable energy, which will help smooth the way for the Anglo group's highly ambitious energy strategy. The global mining company has announced significant decarbonization plans aimed at carbon-neutrality by 2040, including the planned construction of on-site solar plants and off-site regional wind farms for the development of a renewable energy ecosystem for green hydrogen production in southern Africa.

“This is more than just about energy. This could unlock much bigger opportunities in terms of hydrogen corridors, transport routes, supply chain infrastructure, which would not serve only us, but southern Africa really well,” stated Wanblad in an energy outline presentation in July.

Another boost for local the renewable energy market is major Eskom coal supplier Seriti Resources recently acquiring a 51% stake in renewable energy company Windlab Africa for R892 million. "The acquisition is a timely and strategic addition to our existing and valuable portfolio of coal assets. Our commitment to the responsible and reliable production of coal for both domestic consumption and exports remains unwavering," Seriti CEO Mike Teke said in a statement.

It said that in line with the commitments made in the agreement with Eskom and Exxaro, it will start using renewable wind and solar energy in its own facilities through the signing of power purchase agreements in 2023. "We need to be moving towards a lower carbon future through investing capital from coal into green energy. It is not only the right thing to do, but it makes business and societal sense," said Teke.

In addition to this, The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has registered 16 new renewable generation facilities, which use the new licence exemptions. According to Nersa, 11 of the facilities will generate electricity for their own use, and five will generate for commercial use. Most of the applicants will connect to Eskom's network, while four will connect to municipalities.

The biggest project registered is an 80MW solar plant by Lephalale Solar and will connect to Eskom's grid. Second is the Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm, with a capacity of 72MW, which will also connect to Eskom's grid. Nersa has approved 216 registration applications since the legislative change. The total investment cost is approximately R452 million, Nersa said.
