A Bold New Chapter for South African Poultry Farming: NJR Steel’s Role in Tahila Broilers
700,000 birds. 10 massive houses. One groundbreaking vision. 🚀🏗️
The South African poultry sector just took a massive leap forward with the launch of Tahila Broilers. This isn’t just another farm, it’s one of the most technologically advanced broiler operations in Africa, and NJR Steel Potchefstroom is proud to have been a part of it.
From the structural steel to the specialized roofing, we helped turn Chris Travers’ "precision engineering" vision into a reality. 🇿🇦✨

The South African poultry sector has taken a major leap forward with the launch of Tahila Broilers, a cutting-edge broiler operation founded by visionary farmer and entrepreneur Chris Travers. At NJR Steel Potchefstroom, we are incredibly proud to have played a foundational role in bringing this world-class facility to life, supplying the structural steel and roofing that forms the backbone of this massive project.
For Chris Travers, this is the culmination of years of planning and a deep commitment to agricultural innovation.
For NJR Steel, it represents another milestone in our mission to support the growth of South Africa’s industrial and agricultural infrastructure with high-quality steel solutions.
A Poultry Powerhouse Built on Scale and Precision
Tahila Broilers is an extraordinary feat of commercial scale. The operation consists of 10 state-of-the-art broiler houses, each capable of holding 70,000 birds. This gives the facility a total placement capacity of 700,000 broilers per cycle, instantly positioning it as one of the most ambitious poultry developments in the region.
However, size is only half the story. What truly sets this project apart is how engineering and agriculture have converged. The integration of advanced automation, energy efficiency, and climate control requires a structural shell that is both robust and precision-engineered.

Steel the Structural Backbone
To achieve the "new standard" envisioned by Chris Travers, NJR Steel Potchefstroom supplied a staggering 494.27 tons of steel.
This comprehensive supply included all foundation steel, angles for trusses, connector plates, base plates, IPE’s, screws, washers, and pre-galvanized purlins and L-channels.
The roofing requirements were equally massive, totalling over 363 tons of White Chromadek, broken down into:
- 161.248 tons of Corrugated roofing
- 202.473 tons of Widespan roofing

One of the most critical aspects of the project was meeting highly customized structural requirements.
Many of the angles used in the trusses were custom-sized and had to be ordered months in advance to ensure the material was on-site in time.
For instance, we successfully managed the procurement of 1,040 units of $90 \times 90 \times 11.1$ $10$m angles and another 1,040 units of $80 \times 80 \times 10.6$m angles.
Securing these specific components was a "make or break" moment for the project’s timeline.
Furthermore, most of the cleats, bases, and flashings were customized to meet the unique architectural needs of the site, ensuring a perfect fit for a facility designed for maximum thermal efficiency and longevity.

Mastering Logistics: Balancing Steel and Site
A project of this magnitude presents significant logistical hurdles. With different teams working on-site simultaneously, timing was everything.
We implemented a detailed, updated truck schedule to maintain a perfect balance between structural steel and roofing deliveries.
The goal was simple but demanding: to synchronize deliveries so that site productivity never stalled. By choreographing the flow of materials, the process remained seamless.
In the customer’s own words, NJR Steel stood out as the sole supplier he could depend on to execute a project of this complexity without compromise.

A Vision Built on Resilience and Partnership
Behind the steel and sensors is a story of grit and belief. Chris Travers describes this journey as one of "relentless hard work and bold decisions."
At NJR Steel, we recognize that same spirit in the farmers we serve.
Projects like Tahila Broilers send a clear message: South African agriculture is capable of building at a world-class level, even in challenging economic times.
Success on this scale is never achieved in isolation. We would like to applaud Chris Travers and his team for their unwavering vision. It has been a privilege for NJR Steel Potchefstroom to work alongside dedicated partners to turn this vision into a reality.
