NJR Made of Steel DIY Challenge: The Best in Braai DIY
We recently wrapped up our NJR Made of Steel DIY Challenge, and we were absolutely blown away by the incredible creativity and craftsmanship that South Africans brought to the table. We asked you to show us what you could build, and you truly delivered.
One thing, in particular, became crystal clear: South Africans love to braai.
It’s no secret that the braai is a core part of our national identity.
It’s where we gather, where we celebrate, and where we share stories.
This passion was the undeniable theme of our competition, with the vast majority of entries being some form of a custom-built, one-of-a-kind DIY braai.
From complex smokers to portable wonders and everything in-between, the entries made the entire competition feel uniquely South African.
We at NJR Steel were incredibly impressed by the ingenuity and passion that went into every single project.

incredibly professional final look of this classic offset smoker.
You can tell so
much care and skill went into this project.

The "Multi-Function Masterpiece"
Check out the sheer versatility of this build! We loved how every detail was planned, from the
foldable wooden front table and
two side tables to the
removable skillet and
potjie pot stand.
The grid alone is an engineering feat, with
full up-down and left-right adjustment. This is a perfect example of taking the "all-in-one" concept and elevating it into a true culinary masterpiece.
The "Two-in-One" Entertainer Braai
Look at the thoughtful design on this build! We loved how it brilliantly combines the atmosphere of a boma with a high-quality braai.
The creator specifically wanted to "keep a casserole warm" while ensuring the final product looked good, and this delivers perfectly. This is a perfect example of true South African ingenuity—creating a professional, multi-functional piece that’s ideal for entertaining.
